With profound sadness we announce the passing of Irene Engle Collins, our loving and devoted mother. On September 22, 2021, Irene left for “God’s House” while seated in her favorite chair with Kevin and Susan by her side. Although Irene fought hard to recover from her stroke, the obstacles proved too difficult for her to overcome.
Irene was born in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania on December 9, 1928. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Helen (Miskar) Engle, her loving husband of 58 years, John J. Collins, her son, John Jr. and two sisters, Kathleen Reiber and Mary Ann Oldham.
Prior to her marriage, she worked as a legal secretary. Irene and John moved to Brookhaven, PA where she went to work for Scott Paper Company in Chester, PA as an Administrative Assistant. She retired from Scott Paper in 1983 after her husband was transferred to Florida by Westinghouse. Irene then worked for Dr. Ron Fulmore at the Fulmore Chiropractic Clinic in Altamonte Springs for fifteen years.
Irene enjoyed life in Apopka, FL where she became an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and the Council of Catholic Women. She loved her faith, family, friends and traveling the world.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Ahearn (Matthew), son, Kevin, sister, Karen Sterling (Henry), and brother, Stephen Engle (Janice).
Irene’s warm smile, sense of humor, compassion for others and zest for life will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Visitation will be held at Loomis Funeral Home on September 29th from 6-8PM. Funeral Mass will be on September 30th, 11AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Apopka, FL. Irene will be buried in Mahanoy City, PA.
