Thomas A. Monahan
February 19, 2026
Thomas A. “Tom” Monahan (CAE) was with his beloved wife and sons before passing away on February 19, 2026.
Tom grew up in a hardworking steel mill town where neighbors were close and kids sold donuts and newspapers for spending money. He developed an impressive work ethic that continued throughout his professional life.
He moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, in the late 1960s when the blustery Pittsburgh weather became too much. There he put his journalism skills to work at the Fort Lauderdale
Sun-Sentinel, where he met his wife, Janet. He worked nights and she worked days, but that didn’t stop them from blending their opposite traits into a marriage that lasted 56 years. They later settled in Sweetwater Oaks in Longwood, where they lived for 48 years.
After beginning his career as a newspaperman, Tom transitioned to editing an association magazine. He and Janet moved to Longwood, where he started a new career in association management and welcomed the first of their two sons.
He earned his CAE (Certified Association Executive) designation and eventually opened a small business managing an impressive list of business and trade associations. Tom loved technology and enjoyed using it to its fullest extent in both his home and his business.
He didn’t wait for retirement to pursue his interests in sailing, flying, a beach condo, and a second home on the lake. Whenever possible, he could be found in the bleachers cheering at his sons’ soccer and baseball games and tennis matches.
Tom loved Christmas, birthdays, and surprise events. He passed away just one month shy of his 80th birthday.
Tom was born in Rochester, PA, to Stanley J. and Camille Guion Monahan.
He is survived by his wife, Janet McWhorter Monahan; his sons, Michael A. Monahan (Bryn Mars Monahan) and David T. Monahan (Alison Reteneller Monahan); and three grandsons: William, Andrew, and Matthew.
There will be a private family tribute at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Alzheimer’s Association alz.org
