With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Merrill (Adams), who left this world on April 1, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on September 2, 1946, in Plymouth, Florida, Shirley was a lifelong Floridian whose roots and heart were deeply tied to her community and family.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, whose presence brought both strength and vibrancy to those around her.
Shirley, alongside her husband, Jimmy, built and operated S&L Nursery—a family business named after Shirley and her beloved daughter, Latanya. She took great pride in working alongside her family, creating not only a business, but a legacy grounded in love and togetherness.
Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her home into her church, where she found joy in serving and caring for children in the nursery—a role that perfectly reflected her deep love for little ones.
She was truly one of a kind—a spirited, sassy spitfire with a generous heart and a deep capacity for love. Shirley had a way of making people feel special, and she cherished her family above all else. Her face would light up with unmistakable pride whenever she was with them or speaking about them.
Shirley found joy in life’s simple pleasures and cherished traditions. She loved watching Saturday morning wrestling with her son Jay during his childhood, never missed her favorite soap operas, and had a passion for shopping that filled her closets with beautiful clothes, shoes, and purses. She adored getting dressed up—her jewelry always perfectly chosen, her nails immaculate, and her hair done every Friday without fail. Red was her signature color, reflecting the bold and vibrant way she lived her life.
The holidays were especially dear to Shirley. So much so, it became a family joke that nothing could be scheduled around them—no doctor’s appointments before or after—because “it is the holiday.” Those moments of celebration, surrounded by the people she loved most, meant everything to her.
Shirley is lovingly survived by her son, Clifton “Jay” James Merrill, III and his wife Amanda Merrill; and her daughter, Latanya Nix and her husband Christopher Nix. She was proceeded in death by the love of her life, Clifton (Jimmy) James Merrill, Jr.
Her love and legacy will continue to live on through them and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on Wednesday at 8:30 AM, with a graveside service to follow at 10:00 AM, all at Loomis Funeral Home.
Shirley will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
