And Now We Say Goodbye
Great sadness fills our hearts today
As pipes and drums, in slow march play.
A comrade’s fallen by the way,
And now we say goodbye.
This hero to the very end
Was more than just a casual friend,
Who would a stranger’s life defend,
And now we say goodbye
But we shall cherish, all our days,
The character this life portrayed
With sacrifice so freely made,
And now we say goodbye.
The hand salute, o’er Stars and Stripes,
And distant skirl of highland pipes,
Bid last farewell with hero’s rights,
And now we say goodbye.
While here on Earth, you gave your best.
Now in the Master’s arms you rest.
T’is by your memory we are blessed.
And now we say goodbye.

Marjorie Grinnell says
We of Zellwood Historical Society will miss our fellow member and friend, Dwight Doggett. Dwight and Mabel participated in our Sydonie fundraiser several years ago. We have several reminders here in the museum that “Dwight was here.” He is pictured in uniform in our Military Bio Notebook. In our Local Authors section we have a copy of Dwight’s book, BIDDIES.
I personally first met Dwight when he and my father, Charles Grinnell, Sr. met at the Conquest Cemetery to mark the place a future grave should be dug. (Dad brought me along since I was visiting.) The two of them referred to a map, determined where the grave would be, and pressed some temporary stakes into the ground to mark the spot. This was just one example of Dwight’s willingness to serve his community.
Dad and Dwight were in the same Sunday School class at Zellwood, and whenever I visited and sat in on the class with them, I could easily tell that Dwight had an excellent knowledge of the scriptures and the principles of the Bible.
I know my father was blessed with Dwight’s friendship! I am thankful that Dad introduced me to Dwight.
Margie Grinnell
Our hearts go out to all of Dwight’s family and friends.
Cindy and Chance Turner says
We send our deepest condolences. May God be with you all during this time.
Becky Diggs says
My deepest sympathies go out to Vicki and her family. I’ve known the family since I was quite young and have fond memories of spending Sunday afternoons at their house. As well as church activities. Dwight was always full of life and loved to joke with you. He was a very special person in my life. RIP and know that you are loved and missed.
Penne Driver says
Dear Daddy,
Thank you for bringing me into this world. You could be funny and we shared the love of music.
Jim and Jeri Gonka says
Jeri and I offer our deepest sympathies. Dwight was a great servant doing the Lords work everywhere he went. He was an inspiration to me personally in many ways.
