Katie Violet Minns

Katie Violet Minns, our beloved and cherished sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully in her Florida home at the age of 98.

She was the Third born of 9 children in Manchester Jamaica. She relocated to Nassau Bahamas with her family where she started a nursing career. She then went to New York where she obtained her bachelor degree. At the age of 65 she returned to college where she obtained her social workers degree. She later retired in Florida where she worked for Orange County school board.

She always believed “that you were never too old to make something of yourself.”

For a grandmother who loved gardening: she spent countless hours tending to her vibrant rose bushes. Her garden was a testament to her patience and dedication, but she also taught us that life, like a garden, requires care and attention to grow beautifully.

In our family you knew you were loved, when you got pinched or spanked a tradition that started with the children and grandchildren and everyone she deeply cared for. Her hands that worked so hard over the year never tired of delivering that playful pinch, a gesture that was the purists expression of her joy and affection. This was her way of showing you were accepted into the family.

Her legacy isn’t just in the countless lives; she touched, but in the lessons of empathy, strength, and resilience she instilled in her children and grandchildren.

She's survived by her beloved daughter. Sonia Dawn Gilbert, one sister Sheila Morrison, two sister-in-laws Amy and Yvonne Morrison, and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Gilbert family, Dean Family, Jones family, Dixon Family, Morrison Family.

She was predeceased by her daughter Paulette Jones and son Carlton Maccurdey.
