Jerry Troxel Smothers, 81, of Apopka, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 24, 1943, in Columbus, Georgia, and became a lifelong resident of Apopka, Florida, when he moved with his mother, Lemmie Hicks Harp, when he was 6 weeks old.
Jerry graduated from Apopka High School in 1962 and went on to be a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church for the majority of his life. He worked for AT&T for 37 years. He was dedicated to performing his job with excellence and providing for his family.
Jerry was blessed with 52 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Mary F. Smothers, who stood by his side through all of life's seasons. He is survived by his daughter Cheryll Simmons (Ron Simmons); son, Scott A. Smothers (Jennifer Smothers) and step-son David Doubleday. He is also remembered by his grandchildren, listed oldest to youngest: Wyatt Simmons, Reece Smothers, Allison Grenert, Carson Simmons, William Simmons, Talin Smothers, and Skyler Smothers. He is preceded in death by his cherished daughter, Mary A. Grenert (2024).
A celebration of life service to honor his life will be held on Monday, May 19, at 3:00 p.m. at Loomis Funeral Home in Apopka, Florida. Family and friends are invited to attend and pay their respects. A reception will follow at Loomis, where loved ones are welcome to bring a dish to share as we gather in fellowship and remembrance from 4:00-5:00 pm.
