James Mcdowell Porterfield Jr

Dr. James M. Porterfield Jr. (Jim) passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, in Jacksonville, FL at the age of 88 with family by his side. Jim was born in Roanoke, VA on October 5, 1936. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1958 and soon after married the love of his life, Marilyn. They moved to Richmond, VA where he attended Medical College of Virginia, graduating in 1962. He entered the United States Air Force Reserve as a Captain after graduation. After completing his urologic residency in Memphis, TN in 1967 he and his family moved to Orlando, FL where he was stationed as an active-duty officer at McCoy Air Force Base. He was transferred to Homestead Air Force Base in 1968 and after completing his active-duty service in 1969, he and his family moved back to Orlando, FL. He was honorably discharged from the Reserve in 1972.

After moving back to Orlando, Jim joined Dr. Ed Ackerman and Dr. Don Jablonski as founding members of Winter Park Urology Associates. They were the first in Central Florida to perform kidney transplants. He retired from private practice in 2000 but maintained his license and volunteered his services on a part-time basis to Shepherd’s Hope providing care to uninsured patients until he and Marilyn moved to Jacksonville, FL in 2017. Both, Jim and Marilyn, were active members of Asbury United Methodist Church in Maitland, FL.

Jim loved to help others but did so quietly. He also loved the outdoors enjoying hunting and fishing, even harvesting deer and turkeys into his 80’s.

Jim was preceded in death by Marilyn, his second son John Allen, and his parents Mack and Eliza Porterfield. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Tripp and Aimee, daughter and son-in-law Laura and Mark, son and daughter-in-law David and Tanya along with his grandchildren Hannah, Trevor, Meghan, Sarah, and Kasey.
