Humphrey B. Ihunwo, affectionately known as “Apollo,” “Tata,” and “Papa,” peacefully departed this life on May 6, 2026, in Apopka, Florida, at the age of 70. Born on November 20, 1955, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Humphrey lived a life defined by perseverance, wisdom, quiet strength, unwavering love for his family, and a deep commitment to serving others.
Humphrey spent his early years growing up in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where he built the strong foundation of faith, discipline, and resilience that would guide him throughout his life. With a desire to broaden his horizons and pursue higher education, he journeyed to London, England, where he attended Oxford University – College of Radiographers. After completing his studies abroad, he briefly returned to Port Harcourt to work before eventually relocating to the United States, settling in Orlando, Florida, to continue his educational journey.
Driven by determination and an enduring passion for healthcare, Humphrey earned a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences and later a Master of Public Health from the University of Central Florida. His educational accomplishments became the cornerstone of his healthcare career that spanned more than four decades.
Throughout his 40+ years in healthcare, Humphrey touched countless lives through his professionalism, compassion, and dedication to patient care. He proudly served at Orlando Health, including Lucerne Hospital, Humana Hospital, and ORMC; Kissimmee Memorial Hospital; Cancer Centers of Florida; and AdventHealth, where he worked at Florida Hospital East, Fish Memorial, and AdventHealth Apopka. His commitment to excellence and his calming presence earned him the admiration of colleagues, patients, and friends alike. In 2025, he retired from AdventHealth, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service and care.
On December 17, 1979, Humphrey married the love of his life, Veronica E. Ihunwo, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Together they built a life centered on faith, love, sacrifice, and family. Their union was blessed with five children, four of whom survive him, as well as five cherished grandchildren who brought immeasurable joy and pride to his life.
Humphrey was a Christian whose faith remained steadfast throughout every season of life. He was a man of quiet wisdom and gentle strength, often expressing love not through grand words, but through sacrifice, provision, guidance, and unwavering support for those he cared about. He found happiness in life’s simple joys which included listening to smooth jazz, exploring electronics/gadgets, watching National Geographic documentaries (especially those featuring animals), and enjoying basketball, soccer, and tennis. His love for basketball led him to a be a passionate Orlando Magic fan.
Above all else, Humphrey treasured his family. Whether as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, mentor, or friend, he carried himself with dignity and selflessness. His presence brought comfort, his wisdom brought direction, and his love brought strength to everyone blessed enough to know him.
