Mr. Douglas Michael Smith

May 28, 1950 — April 9, 2025

Douglas Michael Smith passed away suddenly and unexpectedly early in-the twilight of April 9, 2025.
Born on May 28,1950 to Benjamin and Carolyn Smith in Orlando Florida, he joined older brother Larry to make the family complete. Doug was a graduate of Edgewater high school where he played baseball, ran track, and swam for varsity. As an undergraduate of Lagrange college, he met lifelong friends and enjoyed the fraternity of his brothers in Kappa Sigma, while earning sports records and cheer-leading for the team . Achieving his Masters and Specialist degrees, he completed graduate school at Rollins college where he earned his professional credentials to be an educator and administrator. For the following 49 years he would go on to serve his community and the students he loved in the Seminole County School District.

Always a hard worker and an “old Florida boy” Doug had early jobs around the growing Orlando area, as a Rock Springs life guard, I-drive construction worker, and citrus fruit packer before catching the eye of his eternal love: Donna Jean. Together for 55 years, they’ve built a legacy of love, fun places, new and old friends and a tight-knit Family. Their daughter, Athena Marie[Smith] Calvin married a man Doug adored, Timothy Scott Calvin. They soon turned Doug and Donna, into, “Poppy and Grammy” with the births of three precious girls: Sienna, Clea and Isla Calvin who all currently pursue their careers in the Big Apple with the everlasting support and bold encouragement of their Poppy.

Doug loved his old Chevy tow truck, his Harley, his BSA, his days in high school, his days at Lagrange and his days in a band . He loved working his property, clearing his shorelines, collecting his stone and bricks, tending to his mom, talking to God for his loved ones, praying for his country, sending daily texts and checking in on friends, drinking coffee with the Panera posse, playing Santa at school, bringing out the best in his students, showing love to the kids who had it hard, saying hello to everyone in his path, waving and honking and most of all loving on Donna Jean.

Those who knew Doug are encouraged to remember him in the way you treat those you love , those you meet and those you happen by every morning: Send the text, get the door, share the meme, give the hug, take the photo.
Love like Doug.

His service will be May 7 at 11:00 AM.

Reflecting his love for waterfronts, Doug loved all shades of blue. If you’re inclined to don a color, we’d love to see you in blue too.
A meal, memories and mementos will be shared immediately following in the church’s fellowship hall. We hope you can join us.
