Charles “Charlie” Herbert Smith departed this life on February 26, 2026, at the age of 93. Charlie was born on August 30,1932 in Camilla, Georgia. A wonderful life lived defined by service, love of family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. Charlie moved to Ocoee, FL in 1951 and graduated from Lakeview High School the same year.
A proud patriot, he honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955 and later in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1962. He served during the Korean War. His years in uniform reflected the steady dedication and quiet strength that would characterize his entire life.
After the Air Force, Charlie worked at Continental Can as a line supervisor until the last can rolled off the line on 04/02/1987. Charlie then spent 10 years taking care of the grounds at Isleworth Golf Course where he was able to combine his love for golf and knowledge for managing landscapes to create pristine playing conditions.
Charlie married the love of his life, Judy on November 24, 1979. Married for 46 years, they were inseparable. They made their house a home in Winter Garden, FL.
For 59 years, Charlie was a Life Member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The Elks Lodge was more than an organization to him; it was family, friendship, and community. Charlie was the oldest living member of the Winter Garden Elks Lodge #2165.
An avid golfer, Charlie cherished time spent on the course and was a devoted patron of Professional Golfers' Association of America tournaments, attending many tournaments throughout the years. Whether playing a round himself or watching the pros, golf brought him connection, relaxation, and countless happy memories.
Charlie was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judy Smith; his son, Bob Cook; his parents, Ruby and “Red”; his brothers, Johnnie and Jimmy; and his sister, Joann.
He leaves behind a beautiful legacy in his five children: Jason Smith; Kasha (Mark) Harrell; Karis (Russ) Willis; Linda (Tim) Romine; and Lori (Gary) Voelkel and his faithful feline companion MoJo. He was a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to 15 great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest pride and joy, and the love he gave will continue to live on through each of them.
Charlie will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of the outdoors, his love for a good joke, his loyalty to family and friends, and the quiet way he showed his love. He leaves behind not only wonderful memories, but a lasting example of commitment, kindness, and strength.
Charlie’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 21 at 2:00 pm at the Winter Garden Elks Lodge, 700 Ninth Street, Winter Garden, FL 34787
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to UF Health Shands Children's Hospital (formerly Harry-Anna Children’s Hospital) through the Winter Garden Elks Lodge.
