Betty Jean Buchanan Wilson, affectionately known as “Betty Jean,” passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87 years old. Born on February 13, 1939, at her parents' home in Day Town, Florida, Betty Jean was a spirited and determined individual, growing up on the family farm as the middle child among four brothers—Jr., James, JW, and Marvin. Betty Jean attended primary school and junior high in Day Town before completing her high school education at Lafayette High School in Mayo, Florida. During her high school years, she showcased her musical talents as a member of a vocal quartet called The Sunshine Girls, traveling through the local area and performing regularly at venues such as the Colosseum in Live Oak and on local radio. Her vibrant personality also shone on the basketball court, where she displayed her fierce competitiveness as a member of the girls’ team.

One of her fondest memories was the life she built alongside her husband, “Gene” Wilson, who preceded her in death in December 2025. Together, they nurtured a loving family that includes their cherished children: Cynthia (Ron) Wilson Hobbs, Brent (Lisa) Wilson, and Sharmon (Zack) Wilson Craft. Betty Jean’s legacy continues through her nine grandchildren—Jessica Wilson, Matt Hobbs, Katie Gardner, Stephen Hobbs, Elisabeth Smith, Annie Horton, Joshua Craft, Mason Craft, and Kody Craft—and the joy she found in becoming a great-grandmother to Wyatt Hobbs, Chloe Gardner, Allie Gardner, James Gardner, Parks Smith, Theo Horton, and Parker Olson Hobbs. Betty especially treasured creating lasting memories with her family, including the beloved tradition of baking Christmas cookies each year with her grandchildren, moments that will be remembered and cherished for generations to come.

Betty Jean shared a deep bond with her brothers throughout her life, enjoying countless memories with Jr., James, JW, and Marvin, who provided her unwavering support. She especially treasured visits to her childhood home, where she gathered with her brothers for family dinners filled with laughter, stories, and love. She was preceded in death by her brother Jr. Buchanan. Betty also found great joy in caring for others through cooking and was known for providing meals to family and friends whenever she could. A devoted woman of faith, she held her relationship with Jesus Christ dear and faithfully served for more than 30 years at Trinity Baptist Church in Apopka, Florida.

Betty Jean will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, her love for her family, and her unwavering faith. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and cherished memories that will forever reside in the hearts of her family and friends.
