After being granted 94 years on earth by The Creator of Heaven and Earth, Alexander (Alex) Edward Dewar went on to be with his wife, Libby, and our Savior Jesus Christ on October 14, 2026. Throughout his life, Alex wore many hats: son, brother to his six sisters, husband of 63 years to Libby, father to four, grandfather to nine, uncle to many nieces and nephews, successful businessman, church elder, Sunday School teacher, and friend to so many. And that is just the start of what could be an exceptionally long list. Somewhere, at this moment, the words are being spoken: "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

After receiving degrees in chemistry and horticulture from the University of Florida, and a brief stint in the Army, Alex moved to Apopka, Florida, in 1956. Shortly afterward, he started a family nursery business, Dewar Nurseries, which grew gradually over time and then expanded to become one of the nation's largest growers of seasonal flowers, fruit plants, and roses, with multiple locations and five hundred employees. Most important to Alex, through all his years in business, was living out his belief that work should be done with integrity, honesty, and fair dealing for all. That, rather than the size or scope of his work, was his key legacy. His employees became almost an extended family, as important to him as the business itself. Alex went out of his way to make sure they were taken care of fairly and with compassion.

Also important to Alex was faith. Over his 94 years, he was a member of only a handful of churches and faith communities, evidence of his belief that you should completely immerse yourself in the communities you join. Always more than just another member, Alex consistently led and actively participated in every church he was part of, living out his Christian faith in both word and deed.

Finally, and foremost, Alex was dedicated to family. Whether it was Libby, his children and grandchildren, or all the nieces and nephews he treated as his own children, Alex both drew his strength from them and offered joy to them. Many commented that when they were around him, he made them feel like the most important person in the world. That is because he truly felt that way, and it was another example of Christian faith in action.

Rest in peace, husband, father, grandpa, uncle, and friend. You deserve it.

Alex is survived by his son Marvin Dewar and wife Bev; son Bill Dewar and wife Patricia; son David Dewar and wife Cynthia; daughter Karen Voit and husband David; and nine grandchildren of whom he was very proud: James, Kevin, Kim, Patricia, Kimberly, Davis, Andrew, Lauren, and Bailey.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations on behalf of their dad to the Florida Baptist Children's Home (https://onemorechild.org/) , Lockhart Church (https://www.lockhartchurch.net/giving ) , or sponsor a child through World Vision USA ( https://www.worldvision.org/ ).
